Angry Birds Go! goes live in the Windows Phone Store after false early start

It was just four days ago that Rovio, and by extension we, teased you about Angry Birds Go! arriving for Windows Phone 8. The link for the latest and greatest in Angry Birds gaming was leaked and passed around rapidly. But the sinking realization of the app’s inability to connect to Rovio’s servers hit quickly and many were left with just a useless icon on their device.

Tonight (or even early morning for some of you), that tale has come to an end as version 1.0 of a true working version of the game is now live in the Store. That's just shy of under two-weeks after iOS got the game, which isn't too bad for platform parity.

Weighing in at 98 MB, the latest Windows Phone 8 game is a new take on the popular franchise, taking a page from Mario Kart racing. The game notes in the description “Feel the rush as you fling those freewheeling birds and piggies down the track at breakneck speed – with plenty of twists and turns in a thrilling race to the finish line!”.

The game boasts these features:

  • FIRST-EVER 3D ANGRY BIRDS WORLD! See the birds and pigs from every angle as Piggy Island comes alive in this rich and colorful 3D world!
  • RACE AS THE BIRDS OR PIGS! Jump behind the wheel and race as Red, Chuck, Terence, Stella, King Pig, Moustache Pig and many other favorites!
  • MASTER THE TRACKS! Plenty of racetracks, stunt roads, air courses and off-road races – each throwing big and unexpected challenges your way!
  • AWESOME SPECIAL POWERS! Smash your opponents off the road and take that winning position thanks to unique special powers for each character!
  • MANY GAME MODES! Test your skills with super-fun and surprising game modes: Race, Time Boom, Fruit Splat, Champion Chase and Mega Match!
  • UPGRADE YOUR RIDE! From a homemade soapbox car to a super-fly supercar, with tons of karts and awesome ways to upgrade – yours to earn or purchase!
  • MUCH MORE TO COME! The race has only just begun – so look out for many more fun things coming your way!

Indeed, the game at least looks like a nice changeup from the regular fling ‘em style of previous Angry Birds releases. Plus, it’s completely free (though you can bet there are some in-app purchases to make up for that “oversight”).

For now, we’re just going to fire up the 3D racer and take her for a spin, pardon the pun. For the rest of you, you can update the previous version or just grab the Store link here to get Angry Birds Go! for your Windows Phone 8 device. Note: you need at least 1 GB of RAM, so no Lumia 520/620/625/720s!

Thanks, Yarim B., Froi F., Kevin B., and Anmol M., for the tips!

Angry Birds Epic

Rovio's latest instalment in the Angry Birds franchise is an RPG, which is quite different from the physics-based gameplay that has made the series an international hit. Called Angry Birds Epic, the game was soft-launched in Canada, Australia and New Zealand earlier this year, but is available globally now.

Angry Birds Epic follows a free-to-play model that is becoming increasingly popular with mobile game studios. The game follows a turn-based RPG format which sees players battling pigs with a team of birds. Along the way, players can acquire and upgrade weapons, potions and armor, level up and unlock new characters. Users also have access to a crafting engine that allows them to create new parts for use in battle scenarios.

Check out the trailer for the game below:

The game is a free download and comes with several in-app purchases. Head over to the link below to download the game for Windows Phone. Works on phones with 512MB of RAM.

Autobirds to roll out against Deceptihogs in Angry Birds Transformers

Rovio has announced it's next Angry Birds game, Angry Birds Transformers. The developer is partnering with Hasbro to create not just a new game, but also a new toy line and set of licensed consumer products featuring the Autobirds and Deceptihogs.

The game will utilize a new line of Hasbro's TELEPODS toys, action figures that can be imported directly into the game. Holding the toy over your device's camera will add the character to the game with special abilities and power-ups. TELEPODS were also a part of Angry Birds Star Wars II, along with the Angry Birds Go! racing game. TELEPODS will also feature in the upcoming Angry Birds Stella

The announcement of Transformers comes directly after the release of Angry Birds Epic, a new take on the franchise in the form of an RPG. Rovio did not announce a release date for Angry Birds Trnasformers, with the teaser site only saying that it is "coming soon to app stores" below the first shot of the birds and pigs as bots. The TELEPODS toys will be available later this year.

Angry Birds

If you love Angry Birds, and you own a Windows Phone, then there's no reason to not try them out now as all of the Angry Birds games for the platform are now free to download and play.

It actually started earlier this year with Angry Birds Rio, and earlier this month both Angry Birds Seasons and the spin-off Bad Piggies turned into free games as well. Now it looks like publisher Rovio has made all of the current Angry Birds games free to download. This is apparently not a promotion but a permanent change.

Of course, we are still waiting for Rovio to release its latest game in the series, Angry Birds Transformers, for Windows Phone so there might still be a paid game in the near future.

Thanks to the many people who tipped us!

Angry Birds

The original Angry Birds game is celebrating its fifth birthday with a new content update for Windows Phone. It adds a new episode to the arcade game based on artwork created by some of the game's many fans.

Here's what you can expect when you access the new content:

"It's our 5th BirdDay, and we're celebrating with our bird flinging fans! Play an all-new episode of 30 levels inspired by your fan art! We have received thousands of submissions. Now, play the levels to see the winning art. Maybe it's your own!"

Remember, developer Rovio made all of the Angry Birds games on Windows Phone free back in November. The original game now has over 300 levels to play, which makes it an even better value.

No more Angry Birds for Windows Phone and PC as Rovio focuses on Android and iOS

Angry Birds developer Rovio is telling customers in an email that they will no longer support Windows Phones or PCs. The email comes in response to a question about any future products or updates coming for the Microsoft platform.

Also, in a separate email, the same member of Rovio Support notes that they "decided to discontinue development of Angry Birds and Bad Piggies PC Games to focus on providing a better experience for these games on mobile devices." The email goes on to note that digital PC games will no longer be available for purchase or download nor will they receive any more updates.

The last update we saw for Windows Phone came just over one year ago in 2015. The company has numerous titles on Windows 8.1 that are still available including Angry Birds Space and Angry Birds Star Wars, but neither has been updated as a universal game for Windows 10.

Over the last few years, Rovio has hit a roadblock with their Angry Birds catalog. Once viewed as one of the biggest franchises in mobile gaming the company's growth stalled in 2013. Since then, the company has laid off nearly 400 employees in two rounds of reorganization reducing their entire workforce by nearly 50 percent. The company recently reported its 2015 adjusted operating loss was 13 million euros ($14.75 million) compared to its peak of $77 million in profit for 2012.

While the Angry Birds movie did surprisingly well with over $300 million in the box office, the gaming arena is a lot more challenging. Indeed, the torch of mobile gaming fads has apparently passed to Pokémon Go, although it is yet unclear how sustainable that game will be in the long term as well.

With Windows Phone market share at or below 2 percent worldwide, it is not surprising to see struggling Rovio drop support. However, that does not lessen the blow. Nonetheless, the bigger problem now is missing opportunities like Pokémon Go and not games from five years ago.

Thanks, Hesam D., for the tip

Angry Birds Go! racing to Windows Phone on December 11th

Rovio has today announced a new title in the Angry Birds series. The popular company has been releasing top-rated games for multiple platforms and just like the previous Angry Birds Star Wars instalment, Angry Birds Go! will launch across the board.

Confirmed on Twitter, Windows Phone owners will be able to download and enjoy the new take on the Angry Birds game. So, what's it all about and should you be interested? Well, it's not a classic Angry Birds game, but instead a take on the racing genre. Think Mario Kart meets Angry Birds.

That's right, say hello to the first Angry Birds racing game.

Angry Birds Go!
You'll be able to pimp yo ride

The game will sport downhill racing, upgradable karts (see above image), your favourite Angry Birds characters, special powers and all in a fully rendered 3D world. Special powers, you say? How would you feel about some super speed or controlling an inflated bird?

Oh, did we mention this title will in fact be available for free? Our bad, you'll probably be looking at optional upgrades through in-app purchases, but at least you'll be able to enjoy the title without investing anything precious.

Angry Birds Go!
Don't try this at home, kids

The official announcement teases "a whole host" of modes and features will be included for everyone, without requiring financial contribution. Starting with just a soapbox, you will be able to apply a variety of upgrades to create your perfect "super-fly car."

Hasbro's TELEPODS will be making a return too. Just like Angry Birds Star Wars II, you'll be able to teleport your favourite karts into the game. If you have karts ready to go before the game is released, Rovio will be launching a special countdown app to enable you to get a headstart.

We'll cover Angry Birds Go! closer to the release date. We'll assume for now that it'll be released as an Xbox for Windows Phone title.

Angry Birds Star Wars II Windows Phone 8

We love new phones, deals, and hot new games. So when we get word on some crazy app deals in the Windows Phone Store we need to pass them onto you. If we told you a handful of Angry Birds titles were free in the Store would you believe us? You don’t need to, go check right now and you’ll see some games going for the low price of free. Specific Angry Birds games after the break.

We don’t know what to make of this. It could be a Store fluke or promotion. It was just earlier this month that Angry Birds, Angry Birds Space, and Angry Birds Star Wars were updated on Windows Phone 8. Either way, you can snag some Angry Birds for free right now. Here are the titles that are showing as free for us and a few of you tipping us:

Angry Birds Seasons and Angry Birds Space are still showing up for us with prices attached. Again, we’re not sure what to make of this. There aren’t any current promotions that we’re aware of. One way or the other, go download these addictive games if you haven’t already.

Is this promotion a US only thing? We’re not sure, let us know in the comments if you’re seeing them as free and what region you’re located in. Thanks! Quick update: After posting this article we're getting reports all over the map. For example, some users in Thailand see Seasons and Space as free, but not the rest. While some users in the UK still don't see Rio listed as free. And topping it all off, some users are also seeing Amazing Alex for free. So what can we learn? Your mileage may (and will) vary.

Store links are up above next to the game name, but your QR codes are below. As always, just swipe to the right in our app to grab them.

Thanks for the tips monotheist and everyone!

Angry Birds Go! lands early in the Windows Phone Store but not playable yet

Angry Birds Go!

We had expected the latest installment in the Angry Birds series of Windows Phone games, Angry Birds Go!, to land in the Store on December 11, 2013.  However, many awoke this morning to find the title already listed in the Store as a non-Xbox Windows game.

Sadly though, it appears the game isn't completely ready for play.

Angry Birds Go! departs from the traditional style of gaming we have grown accustom to with the gaming series.  Instead of hurling your collection of birds through the air to defeat the pigs, Angry Birds Go! is a racing game.

Angry Birds Go!

You compete in a series of downhill races with go-karts that are upgradeable and driven by your favorite Angry Birds characters.  We’d love to comment further but while we were able to install the game to our Windows Phone, upon launching we consistently received an “unable to connect to the internet” error.

This could be a case that the game was made available in the Store before the online servers at Rovio were switched on, a bug in the game itself or AT&T playing a cruel joke on me.

If you feel like seeing if Angry Birds Go! will cooperate on your Windows Phone, it is a free app for Windows Phone 8 devices.  There were some tips stating there was a 2GB RAM requirement and while the game is listed as “unavailable” for the Nokia Lumia 520, I was able to install it on HTC 8x (but still received the connection error).

You can find Angry Birds Go! here in the Windows Phone Store.  If you have any luck getting the game to run, let us know in the comments and we'll keep you posted should we here anything new on the game's playability.

Thanks, everyone, for the tips!
